We know everyone is starting their solar journey from a different places.
Whether you want to become completely grid independent or want to run the basic essentials during load shedding, there’s a package for you at Energy of Africa.
Each package is designed by solar consultants who have years of experience in designing and installing solar systems.
Let's get started...
The first thing you need to decide is what size inverter you require;
INVERTER CAPACITY:
How many heavy loads (heavy pullers) do you want to run at a time?
These are things like geyser, stove, oven, kettle, aircons, heaters, hair dryer, etc that uses 2 to 3 kW when they are on. This is in addition to your base load of things like lights, plugs, fridges, etc that uses less than 1 kW combined.
To run one heavy puller - we recommend a 5 kVa inverter (Lion Packages)
To run two heavy pullers - we recommend a 8 kVa inverter (Rhino Packages)
To run three heavy pullers - we recommend a 12 kVa inverter (Buffalo Packages)
To run four heavy pullers- we recommend a 16 kVa inverter (Elephant Package)
The more appliances you want to power at once,
the bigger the inverter has to be to keep your devices running smoothly.
Curious if a solar system is the right fit for you? Our 5kVa systems are a great way for you to get started. Run the basics with ease during load-shedding. But also have the ability to put on something that uses a bit more power.
Want to run your house with a bit more predictability? This 8kVa package is built for people who want to continue with life as usual, during load shedding, with the convenience of solar.
Looking for something more comfortable? These 12kVa systems will get you sorted so that your household or business can thrive. They can even run 3 phase appliances or motors and make connecting a 3 phase DB a lot easier.
These systems are no joke. This 16kVa package is fit for advanced or elite solar users who want to stay at the top of their game with gains in appliance use, running time, convenience, and comfort—all from your own system.
Now you should consider how many units (kWh) you use per month and what your budget is.
Then pick a package below that would suite your requirements.
This system can run basic plugs, lights and 1 heavy puller at the same time.
Heavy pullers include: Air-con, pool pump and most appliances that generate heat (dryer, geyser, stove, kettle, hair dryer, hair straightener)
*Products are selected based on availability. Prices might fluctuate. Terms and Conditions apply.
Running time from battery storage: 1kW x 4 hours (or 2kW x 2 hours)

Inverter: The more appliances you want to power at once, the bigger its kVa running capacity needs to be to keep your devices running smoothly.
Solar panels:
The more power you use the more panels you need to supplement your electricity usage. Each panel generates 84 units or R 250 worth of electricity per month. Eg. If you use R 2000 of electricity per month you need 8 panels to be semi independent from the grid.
Batteries:
Sized according to 4 hour load shedding cycle or your nighttime consumption.
For every three to four solar panels we recommend a 5 kWh Lithium battery with 4 kWh usable capacity.
CONSUMPTION:
What is your consumption or energy use (Rands/units per month)?
You can find this on your municipal/electrical company bills or from your electrical purchases if you buy prepaid.
We need this to have an idea of how big the solar panel bank has to be to provide you with enough energy to zero out your account.
Work out what your average monthly and daily consumption is in units (kWh).
GENERATION - SOLAR PANELS:
How many solar panels do you need?
Now the calculations begin:
1 x 550 watt solar panel generates 2,86 Units/kWh per day or 85 kWh per month
If you use 680 units or R 2000/month (680kWh x R3) you would need 8 x 550 watt panels to zero out your account.
You can of course start with 4 panels and get a 50% or R 1000/month saving. Then add more panels later.
4 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 340 kWh/month
5 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 420 kWh/month
6 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 500 kWh/month
7 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 600 kWh/month
8 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 680 kWh/month
9 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 750 kWh/month
10 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 850 kWh/month
11 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 940 kWh/month
12 x 550 Watt Solar Panels = 1000 kWh/month
ENERGY STORAGE - BATTERY BANK:
How many lithium batteries do you need?
During the day the solar panels will charge up the battery bank and run day loads.
Any power you use during the night comes from your battery bank as first priority.
If you need more energy this would come from the grid.
Usually you would use 50% of your power during the day and 50% during the night.
A 5 kWh lithium stores 4 kWh of energy (80% depth of discharge)
So, you would need 4 panels to charge up 1 x battery and run day loads.
Thus, for every 4 panel use 1 battery.
BALANCE OF SYSTEM (BOS):
What else do you need to make the system work?
You need the following to put the system together and make it work. Luckily we have you covered as it's all included in our packages below!
